This paper investigates various conceptual aspects of "Ummah" within the reciprocating relationship between religion and society, commencing with early Islam and concluding with the Rāshidun Caliphs in order to demonstrate how this concept conveyed from the abstract Quranic level to the realistic one. The study is based on the interpretative paradigm and phenomenological viewpoint of the sociology of religion. Historical sources are consulted considering this viewpoint. After gathering linguistic and historical data, it is tried to understand, from an extra-religion perspective, how Ummah emerged within a temporal-spatial context, as well as to describe and comprehend the conveyance of this religious concept. The research revealed that despite religious foundations and trans-temporal or trans-spatial aspects in interacting with society, "Ummah" was distinguished based on bloodline. It then got geospatial, temporal, and demographic aspects and experienced a conceptual transition till the end of the Rashidun Caliphs’ reign, through three significant historical points, namely Uthman's apostasy and sedition, and the occurrence of arbitration (the Battle of Siffin). The present research is innovative in depicting the Ummah's semantic shifts in socio-political milestones of history.
