The Background and Influential Factors in the Formation and Continuation of the Rule of ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad al-Ṣulayḥī in Yemen (r. 439–459 AH)

| The Ṣulayḥid dynasty in Yemen, established by ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad al-Ṣulayḥī in the 5th century AH, ruled over this land for a century. This article examines the background and factors that contributed to the emergence and expansion of this Ismāʿīlī Shiʿi government in Yemen. The central question of this study is: What factors played a role in the formation of the Ṣulayḥid rule in Yemen? The objective of this research is to analyze the elements that facilitated al-Ṣulayḥī’s rise to power and the establishment of his rule in Yemen in the 5th century AH. This study employs a descriptive-analytical approach, relying on historical sources through library research. Al-Ṣulayḥī’s reliance on the weakness of the Zaydiyya and the incapacity of the Sunnis in Yemen, along with his effective policies—such as tolerance and good governance, the use of loyal forces, maintaining favorable relations with the Fāṭimids of Egypt, constructing impregnable fortresses, and adopting intelligent military strategies—paved the way for the establishment of the Ṣulayḥid dynasty and his twenty-year rule over this territory. |
