The Impact of the Cultural Activities of Sukayna bint al-Husayn (PBUH) on the Enduring Legacy of the Karbala Event

The Event of Karbala was not merely a political and social occurrence; it also constituted a turning point in the cultural history and collective memory of Muslims. The enduring legacy of this event owes less to official historical records than to the cultural and symbolic actions that emerged in its aftermath. In this regard, the role of the surviving members of Imam Husayn’s family (PBUH), particularly the women, in transmitting and preserving the narrative of Ashura is of special significance. Lady Sukayna bint al-Husayn (PBUH) was among those present at Karbala. She played a role in the collective memory of Shi'a Muslims not only as an eyewitness to the event but also as a cultural and spiritual figure. Possessing a keen understanding of the political and social circumstances of her time, she engaged in various cultural activities. Using a descriptive-analytical approach, this study examined the impact of Lady Sukayna’s cultural activities—especially in the fields of poetry and music closely associated with elegiac recitation (maddahi)—on the preservation and transmission of the Karbala event within the historical memory of Muslims. The findings indicate that although direct historical evidence concerning Sukayna’s cultural activism is limited, representations of her cultural activities—particularly the role of her residence as a center for elegy recitations and poetic adjudication—suggest that she played an influential role in safeguarding and perpetuating the cultural memory of Ashura.
