The Karrāmiyya sect was founded by Muḥammad ibn Karrām al-Sijistānī al-Nīshābūrī (168–255 AH) in Nishapur and played a significant role in the religious disputes of Khorasan. As the influence of the Karrāmiyya expanded, the prominent figures of this sect gained the support of local rulers. This support enabled them to engage in conflicts with other religious sects in Nishapur in pursuit of political power. In the existing research on the Karrāmiyya, their role in the religious disputes of Nishapur and their relationship with political power structures have not been examined independently. This study, using primary sources and a descriptive-analytical method, seeks to answer the following question: What role did the Karrāmiyya play in the religious disputes of Nishapur, and how was this role connected to the political power structure? The findings of the research indicate that the leaders of the Karrāmiyya intensified sectarian conflicts to gain political advantages, while the rulers who supported them sought to exploit the Karrāmiyya as a means of attaining political legitimacy and social acceptance.
