In recent decades, contemporary intellectual currents—particularly those rooted in Islamist thought—have sought to derive a normative model of "Prophetic Urban Planning" by casting early Medina as an Islamic urban utopia. This discourse posits the Prophet's Medina as the seminal achievement of Islamic physical planning, citing alleged evidence such as the deliberate geometric centrality of the Prophet’s Mosque, systematic tribal land partitioning (khiṭaṭ), and a religious mandate prioritizing urbanization over nomadism (e.g., the censure of al-taʿarrub baʿd al-hijrah). Drawing upon early geographical treatises, primary historical chronicles, Quranic textual analysis, and historical cartography, this study critically reassesses these claims. The spatial and documentary evidence demonstrates that the settlements of Yathrib preserved their dispersed rural settlements configuration throughout the Prophet's lifetime; its transformation into a unified, fortified city circumscribed by walls and gates occurred centuries later. Furthermore, topographical analysis reveals that the Prophet’s Mosque occupied a site in lower Yathrib (Yathrib al-Suflā) near the subsequent eastern perimeter rather than a calculated urban center. Consequently, the notion of prophetic urban design reflects an anachronistic retrojection of late-medieval configurations and early twentieth-century maps onto the early Islamic period, underscoring the vital distinction between normative Islamic socio-legal traditions and preconceived physical master planning
